Why Swaps Leave SOL Behind, and How to Get It Back
Updated · 4 min read
Every time a swap delivers a token you have never held before, a token account is created for it and funded with a rent deposit from your wallet. Selling the full amount later empties that account but usually does not close it.
Why the account stays open
Swap interfaces focus on the trade itself. Closing the destination account is a separate step, so many empty accounts pile up over time, each holding about 0.0015 to 0.002 SOL.
Cleaning up
Scan the wallet you trade with and close the empty accounts in one go. If you plan to buy the same token again soon, you can leave that account open to avoid paying the deposit again.
Check your wallet for locked SOL
Scan any Solana address for empty token accounts and see exactly how much rent you can reclaim. Free to check, non-custodial to close.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrapped SOL accounts count?
Yes. A leftover wrapped SOL account can be closed too, which also unwraps any remaining balance back to native SOL.
